Spring 2003 Newsletter Greetings from San Luis Obispo! Pinot Noir rated No. 1 wine of the year by Wine & Spirits magazine According to the tasting panel at Wine & Spirits magazine our 2000 Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir was the top rated wine, scoring 95 points, out of 422 Pinot Noirs tasted over the course of the past 12 months. The results were published in the February, 2003 issue. Also of note, the 2000 Edna Valley Pinot Noir scored 92 points, and the 2000 Thomann Station Petite Sirah scored 94 points. Paula and I were very excited when we received the news. Although you may find it hard to believe, whereas the 2000 vintage was excellent, the 2001 vintage is even better. Barrel Adopter program available This is very much like a futures program. Sign up now at a very good price, and a year from now receive two cases of wine, and an invitation for two to our fantastic Adopter’s dinner party with food prepared by chef José Dahan. Enclosed is a Barrel Adopter Agreement, which outlines the benefits in detail. If interested, complete the form and return it to me with payment. Open House at the winery on May 3, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Please join us at the winery, located at Courtside Cellars, 4910 Edna Road, San Luis Obispo, to taste the newly released Stephen Ross Pinot Noirs as well as the inaugural release of Flying Cloud Pinot Gris and Syrah Rose (see Flying Cloud below). Chef Coe will be serving Cassoulet, breads and cheeses. There will be no sales tax charged on wine purchases. Our Open House is part of the Roll out the Barrels weekend – for more information contact me at 805.594.1318, or the San Luis Obispo Vintners and Growers Association at 805.541.5868 Flying Cloud This is a new line of wines from Stephen R. Dooley. Starting with the 2002 vintage there is Central Coast Pinot Gris, $15 and Central Coast Syrah Rosé, $10. Both wines are aromatic, fruit forward, aged in four year old French barrels, light and refreshing. They are wines to be enjoyed by themselves before a meal, or with lighter cuisine. Stone Corral Vineyard This is our third year of growing grapevines at our Estate vineyard, and we should have our first crop this year. The vines are very young and still developing above and below ground, but we may harvest about one half ton per acre or about one pound per vine this coming vintage. After more than three years of planning and growing, it will be nice to have some fruits of our labor. Paper reduction act of 2003 The Stephen Ross newsletters are delivered by the U.S. Postal Service, or by email. If you would prefer to receive news and information from me via email, let me know.
